This rare table lamp was designed and made by Louis Bogtman in his workshop in Hilversum, the Netherlands, circa 1925. The lamp has an intricately detailed black batik decoration applied on a carved base in oakwood. The yellow gold shade has been renewed.
In the 1920s, the Bogtman workshop became known for its batik decoration on wooden furniture and other home goods in the Amsterdam School Art Deco style. The decorations were usually executed in the colors red, yellow and black. The batik technique originates from an ancient art form used to decorate textiles. Bogtman successfully experimented with this technique on other surfaces such as glass, ceramics and wood.
